The government has signed a mutual agreement with Russian diplomatic or official passport holders on both visa-free travel issues.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei V. Lavrov signed this agreement on his behalf in a ceremony at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Thursday.

Today, a press release from the Foreign Ministry said here that if this agreement is implemented, the friendship will strengthen relations between the people of the two countries and make it easier.

During the meeting, the two Foreign Minister discussed the issues related to mutual interests, including the possibility of visiting Bangladesh's Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev at any time in early 2013.

The date for the visit of Medvedev to the diplomatic channel will be fixed. Russia expresses interest in intercontinental cooperation, maritime co-operation, and sending a further delegation to Dhaka to further discuss the matter.

Russia has congratulated Bangladesh for a constructive and balanced role in the UN on mutually exclusive issues.

Foreign Minister Mahmud Ali thanked the Russian government for continuing cooperation, especially with the help of Bangladesh, to build the first nuclear power plant in the country.
